What is a Teacher Intern?

  • Internships may be available if there is a shortage of fully credentialed teachers. In San Diego Unified School District, a teacher intern is a full-time, paid teacher actively enrolled in a credential program to earn a preliminary BCLAD Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential in Math or Science. We also offer Education Specialist (Special Education) internships (see link below]. Interns are enrolled credential programs either through the district-taught program or through one of our university partners. Interns teach at a San Diego Unified School District school during the day and complete credential coursework in afternoon, evenings, and possibly weekends. Throughout their internship, interns receive coaching and support in instruction and assessment, classroom management, and collaboration and consultation from an experienced support provider.

    Successful Interns

Successful teacher interns are passionate about a career teaching students in an ethnically and linguistically diverse school district. They are excited about applying learning from their coursework to their daily teaching practice with students. Successful interns reflect on their developing teaching practice and welcome support and feedback from experienced teachers.

Interns in the District-taught Credential Program

Based on district need, interns are placed in paid, full-time teaching positions in their area of credential study while completing a preliminary BCLAD Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential in Math or Science. Our district credential program, is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved program. The program takes approximately two years to complete and culminates in a preliminary BCLAD Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential. Interns receive support from an experienced support provider throughout the two-year program.

    Interns in University-based Credential Programs

University interns are individuals enrolled in Single Subject Math or Science programs with one of our university partners. Most interns complete the coursework for their Preliminary Credential in two years. Our university partners are Brandman University, National University, San Diego State University and University of California San Diego. We are also a partner in the Math for America San Diego program. Candidates must meet district and university requirements before the university can recommend a candidate for an internship with San Diego Unified School District.
